Yu-Gi-Oh! Playing Field
The playing field in a Yu-Gi-Oh! game consists of two sides -- your's and your opponent's -- each which looks like the image below.
Here we are going to go over each Zone and what cards can be put there.
A. Field Card Zone. The ONLY card that can be placed here are Field Spell Cards (denoted with this symbol) (E.g. Necrovalley). Field Spells can be activated face-up OR set face-down. If one player plays a field spell while there is a FACE-UP Field Spell already active, the first field spell is destroyed and the second one is now active (unless the activation of the field spell was negated). A Field Spell does NOT count towards your Spell/Trap maximum.
B. Monster Card Zone: This is where all of your monster cards are placed; it is here that most of the action in a Yu-Gi-oh! Duel occurs. You are only allowed to have 5 monsters on the field at a time, and once you play a monster in a spot you CANNOT change its location except by card effect.
C. Extra Deck Zone (formerly known as the Fusion Deck Zone): This is the spot on the playing field where your Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz monsters go when they are not in use, on the field, or in the Graveyard.
D. Graveyard: When are Spell or Trap card is used, a card is discarded, or a monster is destroyed/used for a Fusion, Ritual, or Synchro Summon, they are put in the Graveyard.
E. Spell/Trap Card Zone: This is where all of your Spells and Traps go. To play a Spell or Trap card, you place it in a spell/trap card zone to activate it. Then, it is placed in your Graveyard. You are only allowed 5 spells/traps on the field at any given time (except for Field Spell). We will go over how Spells and Traps work later.
F. Main Deck Zone: This is where your Main Deck goes. You place your deck face-down at this spot. If a card effect allows you to grab a card from your Main Deck, it is shuffled and placed back face-down.
